Painting can be divided into two main subjects
Art and craft
The craft covers the techniques and application of painting –
e.g. how to mix colours, water control. How to paint skies, clouds, trees buildings, how to draw, perspective, tonal value control etc. In other words it is the techniques you develop to assist you in creating your painting. 
The art is how you personally see your vision, creating something that comes from inside you. This is a personal statement on how you see life and placing down what you want to say. The craft holds the tools which help you to clarify this. It is a bit like saying the arrows in your quiver are your crafts and the direction you fire them is your art.
